Watercolor and ink
I am a watercolor painter living in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle. I especially enjoy the watercolor medium because of its freshness and transparency. It is perfect for capturing nature and so transportable. Often I will add ink to a painting to enhance it.
I have spent much of my life hiking in the wilderness and enjoy painting nature, especially on location. I carry a small palette, a few brushes, and some small sheets of watercolor paper. Despite the extra weight, I love to take my paints on hiking and backpacking trips in the Cascades, Olympics and Canadian Rockies.
My paintings can be seen at www.jettes.org.

‘I love whimsy.
My art embraces the bright, the cheerful, the colorful and the iconic. I love embellishment. I love animals and flowers and pattern. I love color. And I love pop art. I love art that evokes a laugh, a smile, a gasp of delight. These elements fuel and inspire my creativity. More is more, baby.
I make my own “canvas'” out of wood; glued and nailed together. This allows me to invert my “canvas” and make it into a box to be enclosed with plexi-glass. It seems to me that whatever you display in a box becomes more precious, more mysterious, more intriguing. The added benefit is more surfaces to embellish. Art-in-a-box.
In the spirit of Andy Warhol, I begin with an existing image; most often a photograph, or found objects (ribbons, shoes, little statues or nick-knacks) and build the piece from there. Using paint, markers, paper, tape, glue, colored pencils, little mirrors, stickers and whatever other items I can get my hands on I layer and layer until it feels “done”. I never know when I begin what it will look like at completion. It’s a delight-driven flight of fancy.’
“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul and paints his own nature into his pictures”
-Henry Ward Beecher

“Sitting stormbound in a tent on Denali (Mount McKinley), I made a momentous decision; I decided I would give up my first career, teaching, and spend the rest of my days photographing those things that excited me most. Thirty years, thousands of photographs and many travels later, I’m convinced I made the right choice. It is still what I want to do with the rest of my life.” -Lee Mann

Featured artist: Jesse Walton
For his first show in Seattle, Jesse Walton presents Fast Fish: a collection of sculptures and paintings made primarily with found materials. Walton regularly seeks found materials for his practice, whether it’s scraps of redwood or decomposing logs left on Oakland curbs, cut offs from carpentry projects, or Styrofoam from decommissioned museum dioramas. The title of the show is a play on the Fast Fish and Loose Fish code of whaling described by Herman Melville in Moby Dick.
“I. A Fast-Fish belongs to the party fast to it. II. A Loose-Fish is fair game for anybody who can soonest catch it.”
-Moby Dick, Herman Melville

Microscopic photography
Through my art I want to share the experience of looking under the microscope; the vibrant color contrasts and unique patterns that can be found there. I want to transform something that has universally negative connotations, into a work of art that can be appreciated for its abstract beauty. I ultimately hope this might help those battling these illnesses find a renewed source of strength; a symbol of determination and even a victor’s trophy for a battle fought bravely and won.
