Featured Artists: Paul Richards

Paul Richards, born in Seattle, lived on/in Phinney Ridge and Greenwood since 1968, that panoramic picture at the PNA of the school class of JB Allen 1976, I’m in it, second white blur left of the center door.   I was never the rich kid so I always had to figure out how to do something with what I had, which is reflected in the 99% recycled materials I use for my art projects.  I like to make people think with my art and add a level of difficulty so you can’t just glance at a painting, you have to move around it a bit.   I also build bicycles and rebuild furniture.

Graduated from the graphic arts class at the DOD Mapping School of Ft Belvoir Virginia.

Website: for art and furniture, and for bikes.

Featured Artist: Jessica Byrd

Jessica Byrd is an artist residing in Greenwood, Seattle. She is inspired by community-driven subjects in her artistic practice, which have ranged from painting live at homeless dinners to painting murals on the boarded up windows after the Greenwood explosion. Her latest series has included working with real people in the Seattle community who have willingly come forward to not only model for a portrait, but to answer deep personal questions that she uses to inform each piece. Looking beyond depicting a likeness of the individual, she looks to extract what she believes to be the most real part of them. This exploration of “what makes us human” has been a question that has inspired larger public works in the Seattle community.

Featured Artist: Aleksey K. Aluf

Aleksey Aluf was born in Kharkov, Ukraine in 1981. At age 12 he moved to Edmonds, Washington. This challenging time of change, transition and travel has had a strong influence on the artist.   Aleksey attended Virginia Commonwealth U in Richmond and got his BFA in art education in 2004. Since then he has been working as an art teacher for Edmonds school district. He is passionate about introducing and teaching art to young people, and hopes to grow and mature in his teaching career.  Along with teaching Aleksey spent many hours working with acrylics and mixed media at Edmonds Community College.

Some of the concepts that influence my paintings are: nature and environment, man and destruction of the ecosystems, travel through space and time, butterfly effect and, everyday human desires. I paint things the way I feel them in the physical and metaphysical world. The painting process usually starts with an expressive mood. Large brushstrokes are applied and the work progresses rather quickly. These earlier stages of my paintings are most intuitive and subconscious, almost coming from a dream or a vision.  The painting then takes a more conceptual turn and eventually narrates multiple themes and ideas to the viewer. Being an artist means I am always changing, and although I find this very challenging and unpredictable, it is also most enjoyable.
