Opening Reception: UNDERPINNIGS
Rachel Lee
“Climate change” calls to mind images of increasingly severe wildfires and droughts and stranded polar bears, but there are devastating changes taking place beneath the surface of the seas due to ocean acidification (sometimes referred to as “global warming’s evil twin” in the media), the mostly invisible and cataclysmic effects of which will reverberate through marine ecosystems as well as human communities worldwide.
In this debut show, Rachel Lee, an interdisciplinary artist with a keen interest in the sciences as well as contemporary drawing and painting, visually highlights recent findings about the many ocean species being impacted by the changing ocean chemistry, from familiar oysters and corals, to the fascinating and alien world of the microscopic zooplankton that line the foundation of ocean food webs.
Opening reception features live performance by The Black Chevys.

Seattle Artist League : 9039 Greenwood Ave N – NEW VENUE
Art Up Site
Seattle Artist League was founded by a student and a teacher, with the belief that everyone can benefit from a daily dose of art. Whether it is through a weekly class, a workshop, regular studio work, or reading a daily blog post about an artist, we believe that art is a benefit to everyone.
The mission of the Seattle Artist League is to facilitate a thriving community of artistically active people by offering creative space and intellectually informed, hands-on art instruction. The League integrates a studio-based education with academic framework in 2D visual arts media. Our instructors are professional working artists, gathered to foster an environment where the unique talents and perspectives of individual students can emerge and flourish.
The school currently offers courses in drawing, painting, and assemblage.

Buddhist philosophies of emptiness and the self fuel this collaboration between Butoh dancer Kaoru Okumura and painter Ruthie V. in her new series “Neither Will This Stay.”
Expressing the enormity of immediate emotions, larger-than-life-size figures transition through solidity to emptiness; move into and out of existence. The emptiness within and around the figures becomes just as much the subject as the body itself. From turbulence to tranquility, these renderings articulate the artist’s experiences of vitality, loss, and acceptance.

My art focuses on disability and suffering as well as hope. I depict my view of the ups and downs of living with both physical and mental illnesses. I express my pain and frustration as well as triumph and joy.
I work with a variety of media including but not limited to watercolors, embroidery, and collage. I try to find and use recycled material when I can as well, and bring old things to new light.

In my artwork I like to play with the idea of the seeming juxtaposition of delicate beauty with unabashed strength. A world of the female subject living within, dealing with the profane, carrying the spectrum of all elements and possibilities within.

Stephanie Morales
I am a homegrown, Seattle born and based artist. Creating art from a young age, I recently returned to my passion through acrylic and pencil mediums nearly two years ago. Both my travels throughout the US and Europe influence my work, much of which is focused on femininity, thought, self-reflection, and beauty. My multicultural background, education in social justice, and varied life experiences contribute greatly to subject of my personal work. My portrait work, both personal and celebrity icon, and a study in line and figure have also recently been fairly popular. One artist I admire and relate to is Frida Khalo. Her work is vulnerable, narrative and highly reflective and I have found my work on some occasions unintentionally modeled after hers.

I make art to highlight the elements of life I value most. It’s a way of reminiscing, finding meaning, and giving these little moments and ideas the attention and admiration they’re worth. As humans, we are consistently submerged in these incredibly complex, intricate, sophisticated environments of contextual and relational oddities and delights- and it seems sometimes the chaos robs us of truly savoring the occasions, emotions, and people that genuinely charm us. Creating art, to me, is about hunting these moments, fascinations, and thoughts down, capturing them, and granting them some form of immortality.
