Featured Artist: Ryan Synovec
Ryan Synovec is an award winning fine art photographer from Seattle, via Chicago and Minnesota. Since 2007 he has been shooting exclusively with a Holga medium format plastic camera. Ryan’s projects Ethereal, Faraway, and Chicago-in Contrast, were all shot with a Holga and infrared film, a combination used by a very limited group of photographers. This technique can be extremely challenging, but when successful, the result is a uniquely beautiful, dreamlike image.
Ryan has emerged as one of the leading photographers using this technique. His Holga infrared images have been published multiple times in B&W Magazine. Several images appear in the 2ndedition of Michelle Bates book “Plastic Cameras, Toying with Creativity”. Ryan’s work has been shown in galleries and exhibitions throughout the country.

Featured Artists: Paul Komada, Paul Louis Nelson
SAD Gallery is thrilled to announce our third exhibition, PAULS WORK, featuring Seattle-based artists Paul Komada and Paul Louis Nelson. Trained in the tradition of abstract painting, Komada has expanded into areas of sculpture, installation, and performance. On view for this exhibition, Komada’s elegant, soft-sculptural forms use techniques of abstraction and knit-work, walking the line between craft and high-art. Nelson’s work performs a similar balancing act. At once sincere and tongue-in-cheek, his pieces pull heavily from kitsch and craft while maintaining the meticulous presentation and display modes of contemporary art. Additionally, Nelson’s background in photography remains evident in his focus on the recording and monumentalizing of time.
Puzzle pieces, stitching, layers of paint, each piece in PAULS WORK is a testament to hours spent, repeated motions, decisions made. Time-in and technique are laid bare for scrutiny. Using modes of production accessible to most, Komada and Nelson utilize, if not the ready-made, the ready-to-be-made in their respective practices. The mystery of production moves away from the ‘how’ into the realm of ‘why’, and ‘to what end.’ Through labor and deft handicraft Komada and Nelson elevate their materials, asking questions about worth, time, and what it means to work.

“Growing up in Oregon, I had a wall-sized, tree photo mural in my bedroom. I knew every inch of it before I left for college. As a photo editor and photographer for most of my adult years, I sought out trees as subjects, always thinking of new ways to capture their beauty. Arbor Knits “grew” from my love of nature, trees, and big warm sweaters.
Trees tell beautiful stories of growth, strength, and support. By salvaging branches and treasure hunting for old sweaters, I can give a new life to both. I’m a reuse kind of gal.
I currently reside in Seattle with two cats, one dog, one husband and one almost teenage daughter.”
