Featured Artist: Caitlin Fennelly

Caitlin is a visual artist working in Seattle. She renders boundaries between real and invented and invented space using a combination of chalk pastel and acrylicc painting. Caitlin’s work explores themes of alternate realities, gender and religious representation. She uses classical approaches to portray figures in comtemplaive mindfulness; as the process of finding, losing and defining edges and texture takes patience and presence. Living in a culture wrought with distractions, fast interactions and instant gratification, our sense of patience is disrupted. Her objective is to create images that slow down and encourage the viewer to be here now.

Fabric of the Night Sky: Illustrations by Julia Y
February 10- March 05

Artist Reception Friday, February 10, 6-8PM

Astrology is humanity’s search for our own reflections in the night sky. Each viewer projects an image of themselves on to the stars, and the stars reflect back powerful avatars.

The constellations and myths of the twelve zodiac signs have been observed for thousands of years across multiple continents. From classical mythology to Renaissance art to daily horoscopes, each era has its own way of keeping alive the stories that are woven into our collective consciousness.

This series is my visual retelling of the zodiac signs, based on my own interpretations of the myths and shapes of the constellations. I have combined my own sense of color, gesture, and unique mixed-media process to create a new incarnation of these ancient symbols. Each piece starts with a gestural drawing which is then printed on fabric, collaged to a background, painted and finally embroidered with an overlay of its constellation.

We are excited to welcome local artist Derek Orbiso Dizon to Flying Bike for the February Phinneywood ArtUp!  Come check out his works while you sip on a glass of the new Endo IIIPA, Kill or Be Kilt Scotch Ale, or any of our other 15 taps of fresh-brewed craft beer.

Derek Orbiso Dizon is a Filipino American visual artist based in Seattle.  Born to immigrant parents from the Philippine Islands, the art Derek creates are expressions of a path in navigating and reclaiming the spirit, memory, and stories of his Ilokano, Cebuano, and Bikolano ancestry.  Derek believes cultural work and artistic expression can be used as a vessel for healing and resistance not only for Filipinos within the diaspora, but for all peoples around the world who have been impacted by centuries of colonization, war, genocide, and displacement.  Much of Derek’s work centers around stories of intergenerational grief, reclamation, and liberation.  As an organizer, Derek values the importance of community-centered healing arts spaces.  Derek is a member of the KapwaMana Collective, co-founder of the API Flying Bookshelf, and a community organizer with API Chaya. Recently, his latest works have been showcased at Out of Sight 2016 and SPEAN Rajana ARTS Summit: InterXections.

When I look into someone’s eyes or stand in the presence of nature, they are the muse. I use painting as my medium to express a feeling I cannot capture in words.

white mandalas on multi-colored backdrop

Featured Artist: Michelle Hickman

Michelle Hickman grew up in New York, graduated from Harvard, and now lives in the Seattle area.  She paints primarily with acrylics on canvas, and especially loves the beauty, symmetry, and symbolism of mandalas.  These ancient circular patterns are found across a broad array of cultures and religious traditions.  Michelle’s process begins with creating a backdrop to set the mood of the piece; next, she uses a compass, protractor, and ruler to create the circular grid; finally, acrylic paints are used to add various intricate details in a symmetrical pattern.  The process is very meticulous and slow, but simultaneously very rewarding.  Creating and studying these motifs can be a meditative tool, leading to increased feelings of peace and balance.
