Featured Artist: Cecile Disenhouse

I am a watercolor painter living in Greenwood.

I have been teaching watercolor painting at the Lifetime Learning Center for three years.

I especially enjoy the watercolor medium because of its freshness and transparency.  It is perfect for capturing nature and so transportable.  Occasionally I will add ink to a painting to enhance it.

I have spent much of my life hiking in the wilderness and enjoy painting nature, especially on location.   I especially enjoy plein air painting in our beautiful Northwest.  I carry a small palette, a few brushes, and some watercolor paper.  Despite the extra weight, I also love to take my paints on hiking and backpacking trips in the Cascades, Olympics and Canadian Rockies.

I also love painting in Seattle.  I find the buildings in places like Ballard quite fascinating.  I also enjoy doing some of our Seattle landmarks such as the Troll or Elephant Car Wash.

Featured artist: Eric Green

From a young age motivation to travel with a skateboard took Eric from one town to the next, to big cities and eventually across the globe and back.  Picking up a camera to document the adventure was a natural progression.  Today Eric shoots travel photography, features in skateboard magazines, look books for clothing brands and product photography.

Pack your bags for a quick trip through the world.  Inspiration in travel.

Featured Artist: Jena Marie Thompson presents I’ll Fly Away

I’ll fly away, oh glory, I’ll fly away . . .

Death of a loved one is one of the most detrimental times in a person’s life. Mourning the loss of one of the most influential people in your life may take years, even a lifetime. These images are a personal project of mourning the loss of my grandmother, not only an inspiration but a strong supporter in my life. The use of birds is connected with the symbolism that birds, being the only species able to be present on earth and fly to the heavens. Not unlike the people who leave this world onto the next, their souls not being present on earth, but within our memories.

Memories of my grandmother singing the religious hymn I’ll Fly Away correlates with the idea of parting this life, along with the subject matter. The technique of scanning different specimen and parts of birds and their life cycle is an examination on the human life cycle, through an emotional sense, focusing on decay. The last week of my grandmother’s life was spent in the confines of stark hospital walls. This experience has only been the beginning of both religious and philosophical exploration of the purpose a single life holds. Many of the images show the fragility of the objects shown, a metaphor for the fragility of life. It is my intent that the work not only be a personal memorial and mourning of a loved one, but also a reminder of the flightiness of life.

. . . Oh how glad and happy when we meet, I’ll fly away . . .

Jena Marie Thompson is a Northwest born photographer. She spent four years at a commercial photography school and earned her Bachelors of Fine Art in Photography in 2015. Her focus is in fine art photography. Her method of creating art is to generate imagery that is not only therapeutic to herself, but her audience as well.

When Jena isn’t creating art, she also enjoys photographing people. Whether it’s portraits or editorial work, her eye for location lighting is above the rest. She enjoys finding new locations and making her shoots with clients fun and easy going.

Featured Artist: Anouk Rawkson

If Kandinsky and Walt Disney dueled to the death with sacks of My Little Ponies in a film by John Waters, the resulting stills might approach the bracing, pop-saturated aesthetic of Anouk Rawkson. The multimedia visual artist, who has shown extensively in the Northwest, will be showing four pieces from his anti-corporate series “THE RAT.” See some of the city’s best art, hang out, drink wine in a teleporter!

Va’sil’s artwork is a mixture of the vibrant daydreams and real-life events which shape his reality. It reflects who he is as a person; a flawed, deep-thinking perfectionist. It’s meant to contain a sense of mystery as you try to decipher it’s meaning. Crazy, colorful.

Featured Artist: Shelly Smith

Amateur scientist, professional artist, lover of microorganisms, painter of Protozoa, and general admirer of the natural world, I make paintings based on observed samples of water gathered from many places around the world. I have nicknamed these “cell portraits” and consider them a different way of determining a sense of place. I use the medium of illustration, gouache, gold, and sometimes even salt and soil, to create my paintings.

I’m interested in the microcosmos, the unseen engine of life in our word that keeps creation digesting food, making oxygen, returning to dust, and springing forth anew. From blastocyst to decomposition bacteria, we’re all a bunch of beautiful, cycling cells.
