My art is about the mind. I paint psychological landscapes meant to reflect abstract thoughts and emotions. Every stroke is an effort to convey the emotional content of what it means to be alive.

I like to make interesting images. A mentor once said all of my photographs are infused with a haunting nostalgia. I have always been attracted to exploring my cameras’ abilities to create the dreamy realities I experience in my mind. Cameras are thought of as technical, mechanical instruments, but I use them much more intuitively to capture the world around me along with the emotions I am feeling while making the images. The end result provides insight into not only me, but also my perception of the somewhat universal experience of life.

From a young age I’ve been fascinated by the natural world. Animals of all kinds, plants, trees, rocks, snow, and ice. And dinosaurs. I draw inspiration from being outdoors, especially in the PNW. Much of my work is combination of various aspects of trips I’ve taken, and on occasion with hops and beers – the celebratory drink at a campsite, a summit, or the bar with friends after a great adventure. I hope you enjoy and come share a RaineMaker with me!

OILS BY DENNIS
I started working in 1945 and retired in 2017. Within that time, I became a workaholic. Three months into retirement boredom set in. After I watched this artist on TV, I decided to try oil painting, even though I haven’t had any formal training in the arts and I was partially color blind. I completed my first painting in February 2018, since then I have painted 29 more. My friends and associates praise my work and coax me on. I enjoy the finished work and it gives me a feeling of self-worth. My future plans are to take a few art classes at a local community college, (it might help and it can’t do any harm).
